Florists are now adopting the mindset of bringing local and seasonal organic flowers to consumers —
Florists are even going as far as switching from cellophane to biodegradable packaging!
So what is all the hype with organic blooms? Consumers have been favoring organic food for decades now. And for the same reason, they are favoring organic flowers. More and more, people are starting to ask where products come from, including flowers! “Are they local?” “Are they sustainable?” “Are they organic?”
Since organic flowers don’t have pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, and/or growth regulators, they don’t have a severe effect on your health. They are also better for the environment because without toxic chemical usage, these flowers are safer for farmers, and they promote the long-term sustainability of farmland.
As the concept of local is becoming more accepted in the floral industry, consumers are longing to purchase blooms that are fresh and nontoxic. As this demand spreads, so will chemical-free crops. This will greatly help the community of farmers, designers, and florists, who work together throughout the year as seasons change.
This all sounds so good, but there is a downside. If you’re a floral professional looking to sell organic blooms, depending on what area you live in, may be difficult as you may not have access to an organic floral wholesale green market.
So, how do you start selling organic flowers to your clients? This is simple. There are many local flower farmers in various areas that offer online ordering. You may not be able to get all your blooms organic for now but there is quite a movement and in time you will. The key is to start off somewhere.
Look for labels “American Grown” or grown in the country where you are from. Otherwise, they could have been shipped from China, Japan, Colombia, or Ecuador. The amount of refrigeration it takes to keep these flowers fresh as they travel to your nearest florist is mind-blowing. Not to mention that floral workers who work with chemicals have experienced ill effects such as headaches, nausea, and even dermatitis.
Did you know that some chemicals that are banned in the U.S. are allowed in other countries? So, if you are really concerned about pesticides in your food, you should be just as concerned about how a pretty flower may affect what you could be breathing in.
That said, buying organic and local flowers is getting easier as more and more consumers embrace organic and local products. Florists are open to the idea of selling organic and local, especially if more consumers start requesting them.
When you buy organic and local flowers, their beauty goes beyond what you see. These flowers are grown with respect to wildlife and farmers. Knowing that your flowers came from a place that is pesticide free can give you a sense of peace.
